The White House budget office says mass firings of federal workers have started in an attempt to exert more pressure on Democratic lawmakers as the government shutdown continues. The director of the Office of Management and Budget said Friday on the social media site X the reduction-in-force plans aimed at reducing the size of the federal government have begun. A spokesperson for the budget office says the reductions are “substantial” but hasn't offered more immediate details.
National Guard troops have been seen patrolling in Memphis for the first time, as part of President Donald Trump’s federal task force. The deployment comes a day after a federal judge in Illinois blocked troop deployment in the Chicago area for at least two weeks. It was unclear Friday how many Guard members were on the ground in Memphis or were expected to arrive later. Trump is pushing to deploy the Guard to several U.S. cities. His administration claims crime in those cities is rampant, despite statistics not always supporting that. Tennessee Republican Gov. Bill Lee supports the deployment.
Tens of thousands of Palestinians are starting to walk north to return to their homes after the Israeli military said the ceasefire agreement with Hamas came into effect at noon local time and that troops were withdrawing to the agreed-upon deployment lines. The announcement came after Palestinians reported heavy shelling Friday morning in northern Gaza. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said early Friday that Israel’s Cabinet approved President Donald Trump’s plan for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the release of all remaining hostages and of Palestinian prisoners.
An explosion at a Tennessee military munitions plant has left multiple people dead and missing. The blast occurred Friday at Accurate Energetic Systems, about 60 miles southwest of Nashville. Authorities say secondary explosions have prevented rescuers from approaching the site. The cause of the explosion is not yet known. Emergency crews have been unable to enter the plant due to ongoing detonations. Residents miles away reported feeling the explosion, and video shows flames and heavy smoke rising from the debris. The company has not responded to requests for comment. Local officials describe the incident as a tragedy for the community.
