(The Center Square) – Current U.S. Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Mike Johnson, R-La., said Wednesday he will not seek to represent Republicans as minority leader when Democrats take control, according to multiple reports.

The announcement comes hours after Republicans suffered a devastating loss in both the House and Senate, losing control of both chambers.

On the heels of the announcement, House Majority Leader Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., and Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, intend to throw their hat into the ring for the top GOP spot in the House.

On the Democratic side, current House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries is poised for the speaker spot.

The 120th U.S. House of Representatives is scheduled to be sworn in Jan. 3, 2027.
