In a piece released over the weekend, The New York Times editorial board quite literally stooped to begging U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy to stick around.

The open letter in Saturday’s edition titled “Please Stay, Justice Kennedy,” pleaded with him to remain on the high court amid rumors of his retirement.

The editors claim to do so “would have dire consequences for the country.”

The Times complains that if Kennedy leaves, his seat would be filled by President Trump, which would mean “the court will have a locked-in right-wing majority for the rest of most of our lifetimes.”

Kennedy has often played the role of swing vote on the bench.

Conservatives have long complained about the courts becoming too powerful and engaging in judicial overreach.
